Chandler, Arizona, June 4, 2020 — A video of a 91-year-old dancing the jitterbug has taken the internet by storm. And inspired dancers, both young and old, are showcasing their own moves on social media as part of the #dancewithjulia phenomenon.
Julia Lewis, a resident of Magnolia Springs Southpointe, Indianapolis, Ind., is the unwitting star of the video. Featured nationally on Fox and Friends, CBS This Morning and Good Morning America, the video has been shared by thousands — including Oprah — on social media.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, within the next 10 years, one in every five U.S. residents will reach retirement age. As a result, more and more seniors are beginning to look for quality senior housing. For seniors like Julia, the right senior living solution consists of more than just a roof and four walls. They seek senior living communities with amenities such as fitness centers, pubs, rooftop gardens, art studios and much more. These features provide access to activities, social engagement and comfort to keep life enjoyable.
When watching the video of Julia dancing, it’s hard to imagine that less than a year ago she was using a walker and unable to do many of things she enjoyed. Like many aging adults, Julie continues to thrive after making the move to a quality senior living community. She found her home at Magnolia Springs Southpointe, managed by Life Care Services®, An LCS Company®, which ranked highest in customer satisfaction in the J.D. Power 2019 U.S. Senior Living Study. Through the Life Care Services Health & Wellness Navigation ProgramTM, which helps residents navigate the complicated care continuum, Julia received exercise training and therapy, resulting in her newfound enthusiasm and desire to dance.
Julia isn’t the only senior citizen benefiting from having a full support system in place to meet her needs at every turn. Pete Iovin and his wife, Karen moved into Clarendale of Chandler last year. “We love the chair yoga classes. If you have bad knees, you don’t have to get down on your knees on a mat or anything.” According to Pete, “The community also has an amazing weekly menu that they slide under the door…along with a schedule enticing of activities.” (The Iovins are 70 & 71 years old)
They moved to Clarendale or Chandler after Karen had a stroke; they knew if something happened to Pete, his wife would be well cared-for with Clarendale’s continuum of care on site. The couple moved from Sun Lakes, where their good friends still live. But Clarendale is close enough that the couple can still go and play pickle ball with them.
They moved from a place that was twice the size, but their 2-bedroom, 2-bath apartment at Clarendale is “very nice…with a deck.” Right down the hall from the arts studio, fitness & cardio studio, salon, pub and movie theater. “Overall, we’re settling in nicely and really happy we’re here.”
“Moving to a senior living community isn’t always met with enthusiasm,” said Margi Silberman, executive director of Clarendale of Chandler. “Yet, we find that once the residents move in and start enjoying the lifestyle we provide, they wish they would have moved sooner. We’re proud to help seniors thrive and live their best lives by offering high quality care and top-notch amenities and programming.”
